Quick Read: Tech West England Advocates announces second UK trade mission to Hong Kong, following the success of last year’s inaugural mission, and the establishment of a tech trade corridor.
Tech West England Advocates, the not-for-profit tech community for West England*, has announced it is launching a second UK trade mission to Hong Kong, as part of its ongoing development of a tech trade corridor.
The mission, titled Your Gateway to Asia Pacific, will take place 21-25 October 2024, and is now open for applications from tech founders and investors. Any founders from the region with export-ready technologies in any sector, including clean tech, health tech, fintech, AI and robotics, as well as any investors or VCs are welcome to apply by emailing contact@techwestenglandadvocates.co.uk.
As part of the mission, UK tech founders will visit a number of science parks with accelerators and incubators, meet counterpart Hong Kong founders and investors, and participate in a reverse pitch investor event. The goal is to foster collaboration, build relationships and establish connections that will further the tech ecosystems of both Hong Kong and the UK for years to come.
The trade mission is organised by Hewlett Rand with KPMG, Eaton Club and Pitchflix as key partners for UK, Hong Kong and Global Tech Advocates, with collaboration partners which include InvestHK, Hong Kong Science & Technology Park, Cyberport, HKTDC, The Hong Kong British Chamber of Commerce, Department for Business & Trade, British Consulate, techUK, Institute of Directors, and Institute of Export.
Richard Lowe, founder of Tech West England Advocates and mission organiser, said:
“Hong Kong is an amazing place to do business and has such a vibrant tech ecosystem. Last year’s mission was a huge success, so we’re incredibly excited to return to the region in the autumn to further build on the relationships and networks that were established on our first trip. I would encourage any business that is considering expansion in Asia Pacific to get in touch.”
Stephen Bennington, CEO of Q5D, added:
“Last year’s packed schedule included visits to the impressive Hong Kong Science and Technology Park and Cyberport, as well as receptions at the consulate and various co-working spaces. Despite the tight schedule, space was left for us to arrange 1:1 business meetings and there was also an opportunity for us to meet with potential investors through a reverse pitching event.”
Russ Shaw CBE, founder of Tech London Advocates and Global Tech Advocates, commented:
“I was delighted to join the first Hong Kong trade mission for UK scaling businesses last November where we launched Tech Hong Kong Advocates and enjoyed seeing the spirit of business collaboration and exchange in action. It’s great to see the Tech West England Advocates group building on the momentum of the first iteration of the trade mission, and creating new opportunities for UK companies to engage with the Asia Pacific region. The Hong Kong business environment is ripe with opportunities to build long-lasting relationships that will benefit both tech ecosystems, and I greatly look forward to attending again this year."

West Midlands Health Tech Innovation Accelerator Unlocks Nearly £50M in Private Investment

The West Midlands Health Tech Innovation Accelerator (WMHTIA), led by the University of Birmingham, has generated an impressive £49.4 million in private co-investment within its first two years, significantly surpassing its original £14.5 million public funding allocation.
Funded through the Innovation Accelerator programme, coordinated by Innovate UK, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, and UK Research and Innovation, WMHTIA has become a leading force in advancing health technology innovation across the region.
The majority of the private investment—£36.3 million—was directly committed by investors to enterprises supported by the Accelerator. This achievement represents a threefold return on the initial public investment, demonstrating the strong investor confidence in the region’s health tech sector.

Powering Health Innovation Through Collaboration

The WMHTIA brings together 21 partners from academia, industry, and the NHS to help healthtech companies develop, validate, and commercialise cutting-edge medical technologies. So far, companies supported through the programme have also secured an additional £10 million in national public grants from agencies including NIHR, Eureka, and Innovate UK.
Including both public and private contributions, the total investment leveraged by WMHTIA now stands at £67.3 million.
Professor Adam Tickell, Vice-Chancellor, University of Birmingham:
We’re proud to support startups through the riskiest stages of innovation so more life-saving technologies reach patients. This exceptional investment proves what’s possible when academia, the NHS, and industry work together to drive economic growth and better health outcomes.
In March 2025, the Innovation Accelerator programme was extended with a further £30 million, including £4 million for the WMHTIA to continue supporting the region’s innovators in 2025/26.

Backing the Future of Health Tech

Richard Parker, Mayor of the West Midlands:
The West Midlands is leading medical tech innovation—from faster diagnoses to shorter hospital stays. Healthtech isn’t just improving lives; it’s creating secure, high-value jobs that drive inclusive growth.
Dean Cook, Executive Director of Place and Global, Innovate UK:
This programme shows how place-based innovation can unlock greater business investment in R&D. By connecting the region’s strengths, we’re creating high-value jobs and building globally significant innovation capability.
The WMHTIA continues to strengthen the region’s reputation as a national hub for health technology, with far-reaching benefits for patient care, job creation, and regional economic development.
