Quick Read: The Innovate UK Women in Innovation Awards is celebrating 50 women leading the charge in groundbreaking industries - from revolutionary peat-free farming solutions, to continuous green electricity, to an AI-powered platform that streamlines allergy management in schools.
This year’s winners are tackling critical social, environmental and economic challenges, creating a robust pipeline of women-led businesses for future investment. Each will receive a £75,000 grant, personalised business coaching, and access to networking, role modelling and training opportunities.
Ilisha Masaun, founder of Birmingham-based Econominds, emerged as one of 50 trailblazing winners for her revolutionary initiative that harnesses AI to transform education. Her innovative system personalises learning, gathering learning preference data from the individual, to help economics students to focus their effort. The approach cuts study time by up to 50%, increases student understanding and retention, optimising their grades on assessment.
Inspired by her own struggles with undiagnosed dyslexia—a challenge that led to multiple school exclusions—Ilisha developed the Econominds Framework during high school. Determined to overcome a system that failed to recognise her potential, she has reinvented the way students learn. Graduating in the top 1% of her cohort in Economics, Ilisha has also achieved success across corporate finance, working on £1bn worth of deal value by the age of 23, proving just how valuable her methods can be.

Today, her groundbreaking approach has already empowered over 8,000 students worldwide. With the backing of Innovate UK, Ilisha is set to refine her algorithms further and broaden her student support across an even wider array of subjects, enabling future generations to achieve their very best.
Research highlights significant hurdles for women entrepreneurs, including access to funding, and a lack of networks and visible role models. The Innovate UK Women in Innovation Awards address these issues, enabling women innovators to scale their businesses, whilst making a powerful impact on our economy and society.
Since launching in 2016, the Innovate UK Women in Innovation Awards have invested over £11 million in 200 women innovators and has built a vibrant community of over 10,500 women business leaders.
The awards continue to champion high-potential women business leaders from diverse backgrounds: 36% of the winners are from ethnic minority groups (excluding white minorities); 22% have long term conditions, illnesses or disabilities; and 50% have caring or parental responsibilities.
The award winners, who represent a broad range of high growth industries - from health tech and agriculture to renewable energy and education – also span every nation and region of the UK.
The Awards drew 1,452 applications from women business leaders, 52% up on last year. This record-breaking engagement highlights the high demand for innovation support and potential for women-led businesses to help drive economic growth which is key to delivering this Government’s Plan for Change. In total, £3.75 million in government funding is being awarded, with each recipient receiving 50% more than previous years.
Recent data across all Innovate UK competitions shows that 1 in 3 successful grant applications are now led by women, a significant jump from 1 in 7 when Women in Innovation was first launched.

All-Female Accelerator Launches in West Midlands with £2M Investment Opportunity

An ambitious new accelerator programme aimed at supercharging female-led innovation in the West Midlands has revealed its first-ever cohort of founders—with a chance to secure a share of £2 million in investment.
The Fortuna Fellowship, created by The 51% Club in partnership with Midven (part of Future Planet Capital), is set to support five female-led startups over the next 12 months through intensive mentoring, funding access, and growth strategy development.

Selected from a competitive application and pitching process, the first five companies in the Fortuna Fellowship are:
- Cubbi – a money-saving app tailored for new parents
- Find Me A Solicitor – a platform offering free legal connections for personal and business needs
- MyBliss – a sexual wellness brand prioritising women’s health
- Visionary Farms – a sustainable indoor farming solution for homes and businesses
- Homewrecker – the UK’s first and only brand dedicated to pimento cheese
The programme is designed to address the stark funding disparity for women in entrepreneurship, with only 1.8% of venture capital investment currently going to female-led businesses. Through the Fellowship, participants gain access to expert mentors and have the chance to pitch for funding backed by £1 million from the West Midlands Co-Investment Fund (WMCO) and matched private capital.
Richard Parker, Mayor of the West Midlands and Chair of the WMCA, praised the initiative:
“This impressive line-up of women founders reflects the innovation and drive powering our region’s future. Supporting start-ups like these is central to our economic growth strategy.”
Rupert Lyle, Fund Principal at Midven, added:
“We were looking for founders with that special spark – something truly original. But it’s their adaptability and hunger to grow that will set them apart.”
The 51% Club, led by founder Tara Attfield-Tomes, hopes to build a platform with global impact:
“We’re not here to do things by halves. The Fortuna Fellowship is designed to become the Y Combinator of female innovation, and this cohort is just the beginning.”
Backed by the £25 million WMCO Fund, which is managed by Midven on behalf of the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) and the West Midlands Pension Fund, the Fellowship is a bold step toward levelling the playing field for female entrepreneurs.
